Screeding
Leveling and smoothing freshly placed concrete using a straight board or beam
Screeding is the process of leveling and smoothing freshly placed concrete using a straight board or beam (screed board) moved across the surface in a sawing motion. It's the first step in creating a level, properly graded slab.
Why It Matters
Screeding establishes the final grade and removes excess concrete. Skipping or rushing this step leaves an uneven surface that's difficult or impossible to correct later. Low spots collect water; high spots wear unevenly and look unprofessional.
For DIY projects, proper screeding is physically demanding but essential. A 2x4 or aluminum screed board must be moved steadily across the entire slab while still removing high spots and filling low areas. Working too slowly lets concrete stiffen; working too fast leaves an uneven surface.
Technical Details
Screed tools:
- Hand screed (2x4 or 2x6): For narrow pours up to 6 feet wide. Requires two people for most residential work.
- Bull float with screed edge: Combines screeding and floating for small areas.
- Power screed (vibratory): Gasoline or electric powered beam for large commercial pours. Vibration helps consolidate concrete.
- Laser screed: GPS-guided automated screeding for large, flat surfaces. Commercial/industrial only.
Technique:
- Place concrete slightly above final grade
- Position screed board on forms or screed rails
- Move forward in short strokes (6-12 inches) with sawing motion
- Maintain steady forward progress (don't stop)
- Two passes minimum: first removes bulk, second fine-tunes level
- Fill low spots (voids) immediately with fresh concrete and re-screed
Timing: Screed immediately after concrete placement, before initial set begins (typically within 15-30 minutes depending on temperature). In hot weather, work fast—concrete stiffens quickly.
Drainage: Exterior slabs need 1/4" per foot (2%) minimum slope for drainage. Use string lines or laser levels to establish proper grade before screeding.
